At least one personnel of Ebubeagu security outfit in Ebonyi State has been confirmed dead, after suspected gunmen struck at a check point in Okposi community in Ohaozara Council area on Sunday night reportedly killed a member of the South East Security outfit.
The victim whose identity was disclosed as one Joseph Nwanja, fell to the gunmen bullets who invaded a checkpoint in the area at about 11:00pm, on Sunday.
A source in the area said “This man was shot dead at Okposi, Ohaozara LGA of Ebonyi State at 11pm by unknown gunmen while he was on duty as Ebubeagu officer. His name is Joseph Nwanja. It happened yesterday, Sunday.”
The Commander of the Ebonyi State government run Ebebeagu Security outfit in the area, Friday Nnanna while confirming the attack said, “It happened around 11:45pm of Sunday night. Somebody called me that some hoodlums were disturbing people in Ugwulangwu, Ohaozara LGA. So, I have to call Ohaozara people because that Ugwulangwu is under Ohaozara.
“So, I met them on the road as the hoodlums started shooting while Ebubeagu vehicle ran inside the bush, as a result of the attack.
“The body of the victim has been deposited in the mortuary and investigation is ongoing".
The Ebonyi State Police command is yet to speak on the incident which comes barely few hours after the South East Governors Forum met in Enugu in which the heightening state of insecurity in the region dominated their discussions, with one of the key resolutions being to set up a 24 hours joint patrol team in the highways of the five South Eastern States.
