Governors from the South East zone of Nigeria have met at the region's traditional headquarters in Enugu, with worsening insecurity topping their discussions.
Governors David Umahi of Ebonyi State, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State and the host Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State attended in person, the meeting which held at the Lion Building, Government House, Enugu, while Imo and Anambra States Governors, were represented by their deputies.
The meeting under the South East Governors Forum is holding again after a long period of inactivity, with the new government in Anambra State participating for the first time.
A key resolution of the meeting is to set up a 24-hour Joint security Patrol in all major highways within the South East, though much is left to be seen in the operationa
A communique read by the Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi decried the heightening levels of insecurity in the region, especially incidents of "kidnapping and wanton killings" which has grounded economic activities in the region.
The 5-point communiqué called on the Federal government to come their aid in providing security in the zone as the electioneering season is around the corner.
Disassociating themselves from reports in some quarters linking the Forum with the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the Governors in what is seen by political analysts as an aside issue notes, "South East Governors are watching with keen interest, the developments with respect to the case of Nazi Nnamdi Kanu vis-à-vis the Court rulings. However, we believe that a political solution is still possible in this circumstance", the last point on the communiqué read.
