Different sources in Enugu have alleged that huge ransoms have been paid to suspected kidnappers to secure the release of the former Secretary to the Enugu State government, Dr Dan Shere and many of the University of Nigeria (UNN) students abducted last Thursday.
A security source confirmed to africafirstnews.com that "Dr. Dan Shere, a former secretary to the Enugu State government, has been set free".
Shere was abducted on Thursday alongside other road users and passengers on the Enugu - Ugwogo - Opi Nsukka highway but released late Saturday.
It is alleged that heavy ransom was paid to his captors to secure his freedom, though the amount is being kept a top secret.
Several students of the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) who were returning back to school after ASUU called off its 8 months old strike, but were hijacked by the kidnappers into the thick forests along the same Ugwogo - Opi Nsukka by-pass, were also freed by their abductors.
Just last Friday, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and top officials of security agencies in Enugu State, including the GOC, 82 Division of the Nigerian Army; the Commissioner of Police, Enugu Command; the State Director of the DSS, among others, had undertaken what was described as a special joint security operations to locate and identify the suspected hideouts and flash points of kidnappers in Enugu State.
In recent times, parts of Enugu State have come under heightened insecurity, especially of kidnappings, robbery and violent crimes, bringing fears on residents particularly those travelling on the major highways across the State.
