Traders And Thugs Clash At Alaba International Market Over "illegal" Tax
There was chaos the early morning of Wednesday as traders at West Africa's largest electronics market, the Alaba International market in Lagos engaged suspected thugs forcefully demanding for "illegal" taxes, resulting in a violent clash.
Reports reaching africafirstnews.com say several property worth millions have been destroyed and others carted away in the course of violent riots that broke out at the popular market.
It was gathered that fighting broke out after Traders reportedly opposed some members of the Market union over ‘illegal’ tax collection.
A customer who arrived the Alaba International market early today from Onitsha, Anambra State, but is being trapped in the crisis revealed that several traders mobilized and opposed the attempt by the union members to ‘extort’ them.
The Union members had brought in the suspected thugs to forcefully enforce the collection of the levies, who began vandalising and destroying wares at the market.
The Alaba International market in Lagos was developed by private individuals and predominantly owned and occupied by Igbo traders of the South East region of Nigeria who son Nate trade and commerce in the oil rich West African country.
Security operatives who came to the troubled market have shot tear gas canisters to disperse the riotous crowd.
