PDP MAKES LAST MINUTES EFFORTS FOR PEACE:
..BoT Asks Ayu To Resign After 2023 Elections
.. Atiku To Reconstitute PCC, PCAC
.. Bans Wike Group From Going To Press
Nigeria's major opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP torn apart after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar emerged the Party's sole presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections, is making last minutes frantic efforts to mend the cracks.
The PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) which had been on a reconciliation and peace mission in the past weeks, met in Abuja ahead of the presentation of its findings and recommendations to the Party's National Executive Committee (NEC).
At the end of the BoT meeting attended by the National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu whose continued stay in office is borne of contention, issued a six point communiqué which it considers will resolve the lingering crisis in the Party.
Addressing journalists at the end of the closed door meeting, the acting Chairman of the PDP BoT, Senator Adolphus Wabara said the Party leaders had made far reaching recommendations that will put an end to the various differences.
Key point, is the recommendation that the Party's National Chairman, gives a firm assurance that he will resign from his position after the 2023 general elections.
Also on the reconciliation table is that, the Presidential candidate should review and reconstitute the membership of the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), the Presidential Campaign Advisory Council (PCAC) and other appointments already made with a view to accommodating the camps of G-5 governors, and making the campaign organs, all inclusive.
The BoT in what it sees as a win - win posture equally recommended, the immediate cessation of media hostilities by the Wike group against the Party and her Presidential candidate.
Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State who lost in the primary election, is leading four other governors and several prominent and influential Party leaders in a protest, demanding the sack of the PDP National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu as a minimal condition for peace.
The other governors in that camp are; Samuel Ortom of Benue State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State and Seyi Makinde of Oyo State.
The Wike group known as the G-5 governors have distanced themselves from the programmes and activities of the Party's Presidential candidate, boycotting several events including their withdrawal of memberships of the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) as well as absence at both the inauguration of the PCC and flag-off campaign event in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.
On Saturday, a viral picture in circulation showed where four of the G-5 five governors including Wike last Friday, jetted out of the country to Madrid, Spain in what may be a strategy meeting on how to respond to the latest peace offers by the PDP BoT.
At the time of this report, there is no reaction from the group yet.
