25 Passengers Remain Unaccounted
Gov. Soludo Sympathizes With Victims

No fewer than 25 persons may have died, as the remain unaccounted for, even as rescue operations continued on the second day after a boat conveying people in Ogbaru Council Area of Anambra State, capsized. 

The Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo has formally confirmed the high number of casualties, though no official figure has been given.

The accident occurred after a boat conveying 85 passengers, mainly traders to two riverine local markets, ran into a stormy route at Umunnakwo Community, in Ogbaru local government area and capsized.

So far, tens of the passengers have been rescued, leaving at least 25 unaccounted for.

Governor Soludo in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Christian Aburime sympathized with the families of the victims, urging the relevant authorities to make efforts to rescue the remaining passengers.

The boat accident has been linked to the heavy floodings in the low level parts of the Nigeria, after authorities of the Cameroon Republic released water from the Lagdon dams, leaving many residents to make use of boats as the only transportation option.

Several communities in Ogbaru, Anambra East, and West as well as Anyamelu Local Government Areas of Anambra State have been heavily hit by devastating floodings in the past weeks.

The Anambra State Government Press statement, notes that government interventions had been sent to various IDP camps, claiming that efforts were being made to bring the yearly flood disasters to an end.

Governor Soludo is yet to visit the scene of the boat accident.
