Resign Now, Coalition of CSOs Tell CJN
Newly appointed Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola is facing some public resentment, with a Coalition of Civil Society Group for Transparency and Good Governance calling for his immediate resignation, over alleged partisanship.
The Group on Monday staged a protest at the headquarters of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Abuja, the nation's capital.
The Executive Director of the coalition, Abubakar Manzo who briefed Journalists said the call for Justice Ariwoola to bow out from the Number One Judiciary seat became necessary to allow democracy thrive as political involvement of the CJN is against the ethics of the judiciary profession and a threat to the Nigerian nation.
Meanwhile, the Management of Nigeria's apex court has come to the defense of the Chief Justice of Nigeria over suggestions in some quarters that a recent public statement credited to him, exposed the Head of the Nigerian Judiciary as supporting politicians when he is expected to be apolitical, describing the claims as only myopic misrepresentations, as the CJN has never at any point said he was happy that his home State Governor, Seyi Makinde is a member of the G-5 Governors.
An earlier statement issued by the spokesman of the Supreme Court, had clarified what it said was a side comments made by Justice Ariwoola at an event in Port Harcourt, insisting that that the CJN only hoped that Governor Makinde would be able to replicate the development strides of his Rivers State counterpart in Oyo State as he, Makinde is an ally of Governor Nyesom Wike.
