Serving Senator, Bassey Akpan Sentenced To 42 Years Imprisonment
A_Federal High Court sitting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State in the Niger-Delta region of Nigeria has sentenced a serving Senator and the Governorship candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in Akwa Ibom State, Senator Bassey Akpan to 42 years imprisonment for corruption.
Akpan, who is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Upstream was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and was promptly taken to the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre, Akwa Ibom State to serve his jail term after the Court found him guilty of the charges.
The Federal lawmaker was accused of receiving bribes of 12 cars worth over N254 million from an oil marketer, Olajide Omokore, while he served as the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Finance between 2010 – 2014, during the administration of former Governor Godswill Akpabio.
